A practical guide to picking between 10, 20, 30 and 40-yard dumpsters.
Think in pickup truck loads
One cubic yard is about the size of a washing machine. A standard pickup bed holds about three yards, so a 10-yard dumpster equals roughly three truckloads and a 20-yard equals six.
Match size to project
Single bathroom remodel: 10 yards. Kitchen remodel or 1,500 sq ft of flooring: 20 yards. Whole-home cleanout or addition: 30 yards. New construction: 40 yards.
Consider weight, not just volume
Heavy debris like tile, plaster and concrete can hit weight limits before the container is full. For those jobs, a smaller box is often the better value.
When in doubt, size up
Ordering a second dumpster costs more than the price difference between two sizes. If you are between options, the larger one usually saves money.
